Can you point us in the right direction?
The car stopped in front of the driveway as my friends and I were playing baseball with my buddies garage door as a backstop.
It was summertime in the early seventies. I just finished sixth grade and I was new to this group of friends and their upscale picturesque neighborhood of mature trees, large yards and winding curbless streets. The man with his wife and children stopped to ask for directions.
One of my new buddies explained the way they should go and the man thanked us and off they went with grateful smiles. Once they were gone my friend turned and told me he sent them off in the opposite direction. I was stunned. As a joke, he aimed them the wrong way, far from where they wanted to go! They would be miles away before they would realize they were deceived. I couldn’t believe it! I felt sick.
And the disturbing thing is, this occurs regularly in Faribault. It happens all the time and not just between kids and strangers but friends do this to friends. Family members do it to family members. It happens in homes, in businesses, in schools and even leaders in churches do this to their congregations. People give wrong directions. Directions about this life and the life to come. Directions that actually point in the opposite direction of the true answer, although they don’t realize they’re doing it and they aren’t doing it to be funny.
Have you ever asked, what is the road to heaven? How do I get there? Some would give instructions to just believe in God. Some would say you just have to be baptized. Some say just be good and heaven is waiting. How good do I have to be? What if I wasn’t baptized? Some say there is no heaven so don’t worry about it. And still others say all who die are in a “better place” so don’t worry about it because everyone goes to heaven! Well, which is it?
It’s not just wrong directions about the afterlife that people offer. There’s plenty of false instructions going around about morality, sexuality, marriage, finances, parenting and many other very important issues in this life.
In John 14:6 Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
If you want to know the actual way to heaven, study Jesus Christ and what He said and did. After all, He made heaven, He should know best how to get there. He is the way. Jesus is the original “high” way. If you want to know the truth about any important human subject look to Jesus Christ for the true answers because He is the truth. What He said is the truth for every culture and every generation even when the “times are changing” because the God of the Bible is the Lord who does not change (Malachi 3:6). And if you want to know what life is all about look to Jesus Christ because He is the Author of life and came to give abundant life to all who put their faith in Him.
Are you going the right way? How do you know? Don’t get caught miles down the road and then realize you’ve been deceived. Unlike my trouble-making friend from childhood, most people have good intentions when giving advice about life, but why not ask the Author of life Himself? He made you and He loves you. The God of the Bible will never point you the wrong way. Also, are you giving others good directions? Read the Bible for yourself and you’ll find out.
